Steam Carpet Cleaning Machine

Among the many ways to clean carpets either residentially or commercially, steam cleaning is widely accepted as the most efficient method. As opposed to dry cleaning a carpet, steam cleaning penetrates deeply through the carpet fabric and will dislodge even tiny pieces of dirt that are securely caught at the base of the carpet. Steam cleaning machines vary in size and strength – while there are consumer grade steam cleaning machines for sale at stores like Home Depot and Lowes, there are also professional-grade steam cleaning systems that make use of an outboard engine to both heat the solution being jetted into the carpet and to vacuum the dirty solution back up.

Steam Cleaning a Carpet

Steam cleaning a carpet, (minus a few minor differences) is just like vacuuming a carpet. Some of the minor differences referenced include that the machine is a bit bigger and heavier and also that some of them will heat the solution being used to clean the carpet. If you’re using a more advanced machine that does either heat or super-heat the solution, be careful. A break in the line can send two-hundred degree water spewing through the air. Make sure all tubes are securely fastened in place before starting to run the machine. Once the machine is running, slowly and surely pass the head of the machine over and across the carpet. Shampoo machines often are best used in circular patterns but for steam cleaning it’s fine to clean in rows rather than circles. As you’re using the machine, you’ll actually be able to see the dirty solution being sucked in through the vacuum. When a spot that you’re working on stops yielding brown, nasty liquid, move on to the next part of carpet. Dry time is among the most important parts of steam cleaning with a machine: these machines don’t dry the carpet as they go! Generally, you can expect to wait a solid two hours before the carpets are safe to walk on and at least a few hours before they’re dry completely.

DIY or Hire a Professional?

Consistently, the debate over steam cleaning is whether it’s cheaper to hire a professional or to rent the machine and do it yourself. Renting a steam cleaner is going to come at a daily fee and you’ll also need to purchase all of your own cleaning solution. Factor in the electricity it takes to run the machine and the hours it’ll take someone unfamiliar with a steam cleaner to power through the vacuuming and you could find that hiring a team is cheaper. If you don’t have a lot of time to spend on carpet cleaning, trust a team of professionals.
